Watching Shadows Fade into Light, Howards' exhibition at Causey Contemporary is a new approach to the exhibitions Howard had at the Frumkin Gallery in Chicago in the 70's.As in the earlier work his motivation was to transform his drawings into three dimension, the main difference being his choice of materials. In the new sculptural reliefs he uses a white clay molding material as opposed to wire armatures covered with latex, horse-hair, cotton and spanish moss. The drawings in the recent exhibition were done on scratchboard, a clay board covered with black ink. The drawing is created by carving the ink away with a sharp pointed blade. Since the new sculptures are devoid of color the nuances of grey are created by the shadows cast upon the forms by the changing light.
